Mexican starlet Gilberto Mora attracts interest from two European giants

Club Tijuana (Xolos) teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora is once again one of the hottest young names on the international transfer market, with two of Europe’s biggest clubs reportedly making initial inquiries about a future move.

The interest is genuine, and talks have already begun. However, any transfer will have to wait until Mora turns 18, in accordance with FIFA regulations governing the international transfer of minors. Mora turns 18 on 14 October this year.

Two clubs with a history of developing stars

According to TUDN, Benfica and Borussia Dortmund have already opened discussions with the player’s representatives to explore a potential deal.

The conversations with Mora’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, remain at an early stage, and no formal offer has been made. Still, both clubs are closely monitoring the Mexican youngster.

It is no surprise that Benfica and Borussia Dortmund are leading the race. Both clubs have built outstanding reputations for identifying elite young talent and developing future superstars before they move on to Europe’s biggest teams.

Europe’s elite are watching

While Benfica and Borussia Dortmund are the first clubs reported to have made contact, they are far from the only ones keeping tabs on Mora.

In recent months, the Mexican teenager has also been linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United following his breakout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

German soccer legend Lothar Matthäus recently revealed that he had heard about Borussia Dortmund’s interest, while suggesting several other top European clubs are also tracking the young midfielder.

A future in Europe appears inevitable

Pimenta has previously said she expects Mora to play in Europe, adding that his eventual transfer will command a significant fee because of the immense potential he has shown since making his professional debut.

For now, Liga MX side Club Tijuana — better known as Xolos — will enjoy another season with one of Mexico’s brightest young talents. Across Europe, however, clubs are simply waiting for Mora to become eligible for an international transfer before trying to bring him to one of the world’s top leagues.
