So far the coronavirus pandemic has not fully taken hold in Mexico, although the authorities are already taking preventative measures to attempt to prevent it from spreading like it has in other countries. At present the disease is still at the start of phase one but things are expected to get worse over the next couple of weeks and the economy is already suffering in the Central American country due to the mandatory restrictions copied from other countries, including limiting tourism and a requirement to stay at home until further notice, which is affecting many thousands of people who can’t go to work.

Layún admits coronavirus fears

In football, the Liga MX has decided to postpone the current semester. Fox Sports talked to Monterrey defender Miguel Layún about the situation the of Mexico is living through.

“For me it was shocking because a couple of weeks ago I uploaded a video when things first started and a colleague from Italy, Nicola Sansone, and who I played with in Villarreal asked me what was happening in Mexico and I told him that the coronavirus took us by surprise, we didn’t fully understand the situation and some people here think it is a joke.”

“After I told him that, Sansone said that he was having a hard time in Italy, in fact the whole country was suffering due to this pandemic. So when he told me that I was in shock because we Mexicans are very outgoing and sometimes we don’t take things seriously and that made me reflect on the situation because it was someone that I personally know,” said Layún.

The Monterrey defender is all too well aware of the situation now and is urging people in Mexico to take seriously the recommendations of the authorities and also to understand that the information coming from other countries about the coronavirus is true.

“My wife and kids have been quarantined in the apartment for over ten days now, we are doing whatever is necessary to stay healthy and follow the recommendations of the health department and the authorities.”

Miguel Layún is using his social media accounts to try to inform his followers about the situation and urge them to follow the rules and recommendations from the experts to prevent the coronavirus affecting Mexico like in other countries.

“I am trying to alert everyone about the situation. I talked to a lot of friends and we all are worried and busy trying to help in what we can. Also I know that us soccer players are not the most indicated people to inform others, but we have many followers that allow us to send a message. There will always be some people that think this is a joke and it hurts me a lot that many are suffering here and in other countries.”
