Coronavirus: When, where and who was India's first death?

India's first coronavirus-related death came six weeks after the country reported its first case of COVID-19 on 30 January, 2020.

India recorded its first COVID-19 related death on Thursday, 12 March, 2020. The victim was a 76-year-old man from Kalburgi, who had visited Saudi Arabia for a month at the end of January.

The man died on March 10 and had also been suffering from other ailments, namely hypertension, diabetes, asthma and appendicitis.

Around 4,600 people had died across the globe when India announced its first death, which came six weeks after the first case of the disease was reported in the country on 30 January, 2020.

A day later, on 13 March, India reported its second death from coronavirus. This time the victim was a 68-year-old woman from Delhi, who reportedly had minor health issues. It is believed that the woman contracted the COVID-19 disease from her son, who had recently travelled to Italy and Switzerland.

India total coronavirus deaths

Since then, India has recorded a further 27 deaths, bringing the total to 29 (as of 02:15 IST on Tuesday 31 March). There have been a total of 1,251 cases in the country, which has been under lockdown since 24 March.

On the same day that lock down measures were put into force on 24 March, World Health Organisation executive director, Michael Ryan, said India has “tremendous capacity” to deal with the coronavirus outbreak due to its experience of successfully eradicating the small-pox and polio.
