Stimulus check US: Will I receive a stimulus payment if I became a resident in 2020?

There are still a lot of questions being asked by millions of Americans still waiting to receive their stimulus check during the coronavirus pandemic.

Stimulus check US: Will I receive a stimulus payment if I became a resident in 2020?

Even though more than 80 million Americans have received the stimulus payment that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been depositing directly in their bank accounts since mid-April, there are still a lot of people who are waiting for this payment to get through this Covid-19 pandemic.

Unfortunately the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, also known as the CARES Act, which was signed on 27 March by President Donald Trump, will leave millions of people living in the United States left out, like the ones who became residents in 2020.

Once the CARES Act was approved, the IRS announced that people who filed tax returns for 2018 and 2019 would receive a direct stimulus payment to their bank accounts of $1,200 in the following weeks. That means that those who became residents of the US this year do not qualify for the stimulus payment.

The IRS added that only those who submitted returns using a social security number can qualify for this stimulus payment, so those people who were in the process of becoming residents and filed their taxes using their Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) won’t be able to get the money this year.

This means that those who became US residents this year won't qualify for a stimulus payment until 2021, when they file their taxes using their social security for the first time. This also means that those who became residents last year and did their taxes using their social security, but don’t live in the United States anymore, will receive the stimulus payment and they don’t have to return it.
