Bundesliga restart: league standings, fixture list and preview
The German Bundesliga returns on Saturday and is destined to be embraced by a legion of global sports fans desperate for a return to live football on TV.
When match official Deniz Aytekin called time on the 11 March Borussia Monchengladbach-FC Koln rearranged fixture at an eerily empty Borussia Park, no-one knew what the future held in store for society and in-turn for the Bundesliga with the first effects of the Covid-19 virus starting to be felt in Germany at the time.
As the virus spread, schools, shops, workplaces and football all closed their doors with governments across Europe ordering lockdown and declaring states of emergency as the infection rate and death toll increased across the continent.
Now, some 60 days later and with Germany apparently over the worst of the pandemic, the Bundesliga is set to be the first major European leagues to recommence with the truncated 2019/20 season with all games to be staged behind closed doors (ghost games as they are known in Germany).
Haaland return
The Revierderby between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke will headline the first group of matches on Saturday with fans able to see inform Norwegian striker Erling Braut Haaland who has been one of the revelations of the current campaign following his move from RB Salzburg in the winter market. League leaders Bayern Munich are in action on Sunday away to newly promoted Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen travel to Werder Bremen the following day.
