July 4th: food ideas to celebrate Independence Day 2020
The celebrations are here, albeit within the new environment of Covid-19, and many people are looking for ideas to add the American touch to their tasty delights.
With the July 4th weekend upon us, we thought we’d offer up some suggestions for the ideal food and drink options to go along with your celebrations. After a few failed attempts by the team in the AS kitchen, we decided we’d leave it to the experts, so here are a selection of our favourites.
Food ideas for July 4th celebrations
Memphis Dry-Rubbed Baby Back Ribs Recipe by Southern Living
What they say: These smoked ribs are surprisingly easy to make, even for a first-timer, and outrageously good. A Memphis-style dry rub forms a delicious crust around the meat, making them savory and tender. A vinegar wash with an extra sprinkling of dry rub at the end of the cooking process adds another layer of flavor—no sauce necessary. Be sure to add these baby back ribs to your summer barbecue menu. No messy sauce means easy eating. Try it!
4th of July Pulled Pork, via All Recipes
What they say: I serve this to guests during the summer and is one of my favorites especially if feeding a crowd! I use the Smokin' Jack BBQ Sauce recipe on this site! Try it!
Red, White and Blueberry Salad by Shared Appetite
What they say: A blueberry caprese salad works. It really works. It makes summer taste, well, more summer-y. Try it!
American Flag Cheese Plate by The Kitchen Prep
What they say: The most patriotic plate at your 4th of July block party is sure to be this Old Glory-inspired cheese plate! Beautiful enough to double as a centerpiece, but easy enough to arrange in minutes, it’s a true example of summer’s easygoing entertaining vibes! Try it!
Patriotic Pancake Stacks by Modern Parents, Messy Kids
What they say: These little breakfast stacks are made by layering mini pancakes, whipped cream and fresh fruit. You can assemble them ahead of time if you are expecting guests (though the banana might get a bit brown, see below for a substitution idea) or make them that morning using your favorite pancake recipe. A single stack is the perfect portion size for young kids, but I’d be tempted to add a side of crispy bacon to the plate to round out the meal. (You know… for protein.) Try it!
Old-Fashioned Lemonade by Country Living
What they say: As easy as 1, 2, 3—sugar, fresh lemon juice, and water—are all it takes to whip up a batch of good 'ole fashioned lemonade. Add vodka or gin for an adult kick. Try it!
