India surpasses Italy in nations with the highest Covid-19 death toll
India has become the country with the fifth-highest Covid-19 fatality toll after replacing Italy.
With the death toll of 35,747 individuals, India has replaced Italy (35,132 deaths) claiming fifth place globally among the countries with the highest death tolls due to Coronavirus infection.
There are only four countries in the world with higher Covid-19 related fatalities; the United States (152,070 fatalities), Brazil (91,263 fatalities), the United Kingdom (46,084 fatalities) and Mexico (46,000 fatalities), according to Johns Hopkins University.
On Friday, India has recorded the highest ever one-day spike in cases as more than 55,000 new cases were reported taking the Covid-19 cases tally up to 1, 638,281 with 5.45 lakh active cases.
Recovery rate has significantly improved
There is a silver lining however, with the recovery rate in the country improving as 32,553 patients across the country have been discharged from hospitals and isolation centres in 24 hours.
The Indian Ministry of Health has announced that 10,57,806 patients have recovered from the virus confirming that recovery rate is now 1.9 times the active cases, with the fatality rate has dropped to 2.21% while the recovery rate among patients is estimated to be 64.44%.

"There has been a continued increase in the average daily recoveries from around 15,000 in the first week of July to around 35,000 in the last week," the ministry said in a statement.
Rajesh Bhushan, an Officer on Special Duty at the Health Ministry stated at a press briefing "India's case fatality rate is 2.21 percent, as against 4 percent globally, and is amongst the lowest in the world. Case Fatality Rate in Mexico and the UK are five and seven times higher, respectively, as compared to India".
