India registers another global record high single-day spike
Once more India records a global record-high single-day spike with 82,860 new coronavirus cases confirmed in just 24 hours.
Having reported more than 3.8 million Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, India, today recorded the highest ever single-day spike any country has witnessed, when 82,860 fresh cases were reported over the span of 24 hours at a time when Narendra Modi’s government is pushing ahead to revive the shattered economy.
India's economy has recently been subject to massive a reductions, due to the pandemic and the several subsequent lockdowns imposed since then.
The deteriorating economy has forced the government to speed up the process of gradually lifting lockdown restrictions to bring some normality back to life and improve the economic conditions.
The Indian government focused in all it recent addresses on reassuring the public by highlighting the increase in recovery rate as well as the declining fatality rate, that has become one among the lowest globally ignoring the dangers posed by the constant increase in daily infections, which pushed some people to reach complacency and overlook the importance of taking precautionary measures.
Shahid Jameel, chief executive of the Welcome Trust/DBT Alliance, a biomedical research charity " The numbers are alarming. This constant rosy narrative from the government that our recovery rate is improving, our death rate is low, has made people complacent. I feel this is the reason for the spike in cases.”
Jameel also added that he totally supports re-opening and reviving the economy but this has to be accompanied by strict enforcement of precautionary measures such as wearing face masks that many people disregard.
