Club América beat Chivas in El Clásico Nacional

A first-half strike from Giovani dos Santos gave Club América victory against Chivas at the Azteca stadium in matchday 11 of the 2020 Guardianes tournament. The result puts the home team second in the table on 23 points - just two points behind leaders Cruz Azul.

Dos Santos finally finds the net

Since joining Club América in 2019, Giovani dos Santos has had some difficulties adapting to the team and injuries have kept him on the sidelines for several games. But in Mexico’s biggest football rivalry the former LA Galaxy player stepped up and showed why he brought in by América as a superstar.

It came in the 27th minute of the game, after a very tense start with few shots on goal; América had started a sequence of passes, when Sánchez gave a through ball to Giovani who quickly controlled then rifled home from inside the box.

Controversy in El Clásico Nacional

A game of this magnitude usually has its faire share of controversial refereeing decisions. After América's goal, Chivas went looking for an equalizer. Uriel Antuna dribbled his way into the box but his run was halted by Jorge Sánchez - but the referee did not call the foul.

During the second half, América were still the most dangerous-looking of the two. On the 69th minute, Sebastián Córdova had the ball in the net for the home team, but VAR notified the referee that América’s striker Henry Martin had committed a foul prior to the goal.

After 90 minutes and some controversies, Club América defeated Chivas 1-0 and with this victory they are in the second place of the table with 23 points, just behind Cruz Azul. While Chivas suffered their first defeat in four games and dropped one place to seventh on 15 points.
