The Boys: will it have a season 3 in Amazon Prime? If so, when?

With the coronavirus making a muck of most everything these days producing new shows for television has become a more complicated affair. No wonder then when a confusing headline in The Ringer just days before the season 2 finale of The Boys caused panic for fans. Rest peacefully, season 3 is still on its way and the season 2 finale drops Friday 9 October.

Season 3 announced

In July, during the San Diego Comic-Con@home during a panel interview with the cast Seth Rogan, executive producer, announced that "Because this show has fans and is watched by people like you, [Amazon] have decided to renew it." This announcement came even before the current season 2 of the show premiered on 4 September.

For those of you unfamiliar with The Boys, it takes the superhero genre and turns it on its head. Eric Kripke, the showrunner, developed the show based on the New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It's a world in which superheroes are celebrities and as Eric Kripke said "The characters are just truly horrible people."

What can we expect in season 3

In an interview with Steve Weintraub at Collider Eric Kripke gave details about season 3. "The writers and I are hard at work in the (virtual) writer’s room and we’re sad to say, the world has given us way too much material. We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that’s up to a microscopic virus.” Kripke also said that they have 4 episodes written and plan to have all of them ready before shooting. So with any luck the show will be ready by the end of 2021.

Some new additions are coming to season 3 in the form of “Supernatural” star Jensen Ackles who will play the part of Soldier Boy aka the original superhero in the streaming drama. After Soldier Boy fought in World War II, he became the first super celebrity and a mainstay of American culture for decades. Jensen Ackles announced he was coming to the show over Instagram. "Supernaturals" was also created by Eric Kripke.

Due to complications inherent with travel in the Covid-19 era, Jeffrey Dean Morgan's participation in The Boys season 3 is still not formal. Morgan and Kripke have been talking but The Walking Dead star still has commitments to the show making travelling between the two sets unfeasible. The Boys is filmed in Toronto and The Walking Dead in Georgia so Morgan would have to quarantine upon entering Canada.
