Marseille will try to recover from their opening-day showdown defeat to Greek champions Olympiacos against group C favourites Manchester City.

The hosts, the only French club to ever win the most important European competition, will need to be more consistent against the English squad if they want to grab a positive result.

The French outfit, in their first appearance in the Champions League since the 2013-14 campaign, will have Dimitri Payet back to the starting lineup. The French winger had sat out the win over Lorient through suspension and he will likely join Darío Benedetto up front.

Although City is struggling in the domestic competition (13th position), Marseille’s coach Andre Villas-Boas is well aware of Citizens’ quality, so he will probably try to strenghten the defence with Leonardo Balerdi, Álvaro González and Duje Caleta-Car.

However, the bad news for City is that Pep Guardiola will still have to wait to see Sergio Agüero, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne play together in the attack.

The Argentinian star was replaced after just 45 minutes against West Ham last weekend due to a hamstring injury. The striker had only just returned to action against The Hammers after four months on the sidelines following knee surgery.

Meanwhile, striker Jesus will return to the team in 1-2 weeks, according to City. He has been out of action since the opening day win at Wolves last month.

Guardiola could deploy Raheem Sterling up front with De Bruyne and Phil Foden, who is expected to come back into the starting lineup.

On the other hand, Fernandinho and Benjamin Mendy will likely be sidelined until after the international break, Aymeric Laporte could return to action and Nathan Ake could be ready in the upcoming days.
