Alex Morgan outscoring Cristiano Ronaldo
On 102 goals the Portuguese star is edging closer to levelling the international record held by Iranian striker Ali Deai, but Morgan is still ahead.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in Portugal’s 7-0 victory over Andorra on 11 November, an exhibition match prior to the final two games of the UEFA Nations Cup group stage. The Portuguese striker now has 102 international goals and he is only seven away from levelling the record held by Iran striker Ali Daei who has 109.
It was in October when Ronaldo surpassed the 100-goal milestone for Portugal, scoring twice against Sweden in the Nations League. Now he is preparing to close the gap in his next two matches as Portugal face France (14 November) and Croatia (17 November) for matchday 5 and 6 respectively of the tournament.
Alex Morgan leading on international goals
It has taken over a decade for Cristiano Ronaldo to reach 102 goals for Portugal, something Alex Morgan has already achieved. The United States Women’s national team striker has scored 107 goals, five more than Ronaldo, in 169 appearances and she is hoping to reach full fitness to be a part of the squad that will feature in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics next summer.
Morgan had a 15-month break from the game due to pregnancy before making her return to the pitch in her debut with Tottenham on 8 November. The two-time World Cup winner came on in the 69th minute during the game in the English Women’s Super League.
The incredible success of the USWNT has seen others surpass the goal-bulging feats of Ronaldo:
Michelle Akers - 107 goals
Carli Lloyd - 123 goals
Kristine Lilly - 130 goals
Mia Hamm - 158 goals
Abby Wambach - 184 goals
