Olympiacos vs Manchester City: Champions League preview

City, the leaders in qualifying Group C are guests of the team currently in third, Olympiacos but both will be hoping to advance to the knockout round. Pedro Martins’ Olympiacos have been performing better at home – their only victory so far during the group stage was at their own stadium against Olympique Marseille on Matchday 1. Nevertheless, they have only lost two of their last 16 outings in European competition and have won the rest. This will be only the second time that these two clubs have met – the first was just three weeks ago on Matchday 3 when Guardiola’s team eased to a 3-0 win.

Martins has a few doubts going into the game – strike pair El-Arabi and Hassan have been sidelined since last week which means Hilal Soudani is the only forward in a midfield-heavy 23-man squad list for the game. Soudani will bring up his 50th appearance in European competition – as will Kostas Fortounis, if both feature on Wednesday. Midfielders Vasilis Sourlis and Mady Camara are back from injury as are Rúben Vinagre and Ousseynou Ba.

A victory would be enough for Guardiola’s City to mathematically book their place in the next round. They go into this game with a perfect run of three wins in this, their tenth Champions League campaign. Guardiola will be thrilled to be in the position to name his strongest XI in Piraeus – only Nathan Ake, who picked up a hamstring injury while on international duty with the Netherlands has not made the trip. Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho have been a clean bill of health and make the 23-man travelling squad, as do academy stars Felix Nmecha, Tommy Doyle and Cole Palmer

In charge out of the pitch on Wednesday will be Italian referee Davide Massa and his team of officials.
