Atlético to lodge appeal with FIFA to see Trippier ban overturned
Atlético feel that they have been unfairly punished for something that has nothing to do with them and will request an injunction.
Atlético have lodged an appeal to FIFA with reference to the ban served to Kieran Trippier which leaves the defender unable to play for 10 weeks. The club have set the wheels in motion to defend their own interests in the case by contacting world football's governing body. Atlético feel that they have nothing to do with the matter, they are completely removed from what happened with the player, feel they are being unfairly punished and believe that if Tripper is banned, then England should be the ones who are affected.
Ironically, the ban which the English FA imposed will have no impact on the national team as England have no commitments during the period when Trippier is unable to play. England's next game is against San Marino on 25 March. The investigation lasted several months and was concluded this week when Trippier was charged with breaching betting regulations.
The Atlético right-back was accused of violating the Football Association's betting rules in the summer of 2019, when he completed his move from Tottenham to the Spanish capital. Atlético are seeking an injunction for Trippier, although club sources admit that it will be difficult for one to be granted.
Atleti won't sign a replacement for Trippier
Atlético have no plans to sign a replacement right-back when the January window opens. If Trippier's ban is upheld, Vrsaljko will occupy his place; B team player Ricard is an alternative option - he scored on his debut in the recent Cup tie against Cardassar. The club and technical department have decided that there is no point in signing a player for two months of competition. Simeone has faith in the players he already has in the squad, should he be without Trippier for the next 10 weeks. In the meantime, Atlético will wait for FIFA to make a decision.
