In the U.S., certain benefits recipients are to get their latest monthly money next Thursday, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) kicks off its July 2026 payment schedule for the Social Security program.
On July 2 - a day earlier than usual - Social Security benefits are to be sent out to two groups of recipients.
Who gets Social Security on Thursday, July 2?
- Some long-term beneficiaries
July’s benefits are to be issued to recipients who signed up for Social Security before May 1997.
- Dual recipients (Social Security + SSI)
Thursday is also July’s distribution date for Social Security beneficiaries who combine the program with Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
A scheme for certain low-income individuals, SSI differs from Social Security as it is needs-based. Eligibility for the benefit is not dependent on a recipient’s work record.
In July, SSI payments - which average $738.13 per month - are scheduled to go out on Wednesday 1.
Why the early payment?
The above groups of long-term and dual beneficiaries normally get their Social Security payments on the third day of each month. However, distribution has been brought forward because July 3 is a federal holiday, as part of the U.S.’s Independence Day celebrations.

When are other Social Security beneficiaries paid in July 2026?
Of the U.S.’s 71.2 million recipients of Social Security benefits, many will be paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in July, depending on their birthday:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: Wednesday, July 8
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: Wednesday, July 15
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: Wednesday, July 22
NB: If you claim Social Security payments based on someone else’s employment history, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.
How does the Social Security Admin pay monthly benefits?
- Direct deposit
Social Security beneficiaries can update their banking information using the online “my Social Security” tool.
- Direct Express
Money can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for receiving federal disbursements. Sign up for Direct Express at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
