Messi: Beckham's Inter Miami plan deal for Barcelona captain

Leo Messi’s interview with journalist Jordi Évole covered a lot of ground and during the chat the Barcelona superstar expressed an interest in playing in Major League Soccer. Messi doesn’t talk much, but when he does, his words are picked up around the world and David Beckham's MLS venture Inter Miami paid particular attention to that section of the interview.

Messi has not renewed his contract with Barcelona and with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2021 the Argentina captain can formally start talking to other clubs starting as of 1 January, 2021. The 33-year-old has been linked with potential moves to Manchester City, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, but MLS could prove a desirable destination for Messi as he enters the twilight of his career.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic there are only few teams in Major League Soccer that could consider the cost of making a move for Messi. One of those is New York City F.C., due to their affiliation with Manchester City, and the other is Inter Miami. David Beckham has already demonstrated he has the financial clout to influence to bring big names: Gonzalo Higuaín and Blaise Matuidi joined recently and Messi could be next in the near future.

Messi on MLS

I have always been intrigued about living in the United States and to play in Major League Soccer. I want to experience the league and live in the US, but to be honest I don’t know if it will happen because I am not talking about next year or the next,” said Messi during the interview with Évola.

It has been rumored that David Beckham's franchise wants to pair Higuaín with Oliver Giroud for the 2021 MLS season. Beckham has offered the France striker an apartment in the Porsche Towers and Messi already owns one in the same building. If the 33-year-old were to play in MLS, he would be offered one of the most lucrative contracts in the league's history, maybe on a par with the one Beckham signed with LA Galaxy in 2007.
