Matías Almeyda declines offer to coach Cruz Azul

Matías Almeyda will remain as San Jose Earthquakes head coach for his third consecutive season and his goal is to win titles in Major League Soccer in 2021. According to journalist César Luis Merlo from SuperDeportivo, the Argentine head coach declined an offer to manage Mexican side, Cruz Azul, to continue his MLS adventure.

Almeyda has a contract with the Earthquakes until December 2022 and he plans to fulfill it. According to SuperDeportivo, he hasn’t achieved what he promised to the bosses and the club respected his process in 2019, when he failed to reach the MLS Cup Playoffs in his first year.

‘Third times a charm’

During his second year in Major League Soccer, Matías Almeyda was able to guide San Jose Earthquakes to the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, but they were eliminated in a penalty shootout in the first round by Sporting Kansas City.

In one year, the Earthquakes went from 12th to 8th place in the Western Conference by the end of the Major League Soccer regular season. The team is showing a big improvement under Almeyda. The good news is that the MLS all-time record goalscorer, Chris Wondolowski, has resigned a one-year contract for the 2021 campaign.
