"The goal at Club América is to always win the league" - Solari

On Saturday, Santiago Solari held his first press conference as the new head coach of Club América ahead of the beginning of the 2021 Guardianes tournament. The Argentine coach is aware of the pressure he will be under for coaching one of the most important clubs in Mexico, especially after they failed to win a trophy last season under Miguel Herrera.

We are extremely excited about this year, this moment an start this tournament with América. This is one of the biggest clubs in the country, if not the biggest, and their objectives are always lifting the title, we compete to win it all always.

“My teams are always protagonists, intense, winners and we try to portray that on the field because we will never give up, so in order to achieve that we need to work hard. I met the team and part of the coaching staff and everything went well. There are things I can’t talk about but I am just excited to start working,” added Solari.

Solari can handle the pressure

The Argentine is aware of the importance of América and what a loss can do to his project. “I love the pressure of coaching a big club like América and the players in the roster are aware of that too. We know that this club has a total of 35 titles in all competitions and our job is to win more.

“We can’t dwell on what happened in the past and we need to focus on the future now. The players have learned from the mistakes in the past and now it is time to move on and it is my job to help bring the best out of them. So all we need to do is work hard every day,” said Solari.

Solari will coach his first official game on 6 January against Atlético San Luis for matchday 1 of the 2021 Guardianes tournament at the Azteca stadium. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the game will be played behind closed doors.
