Cruz Azul appoint Juan Reynoso as their new head coach
The 'Machine' officially appointed Juan Reynoso as their new head coach for the 2021 Guardianes tournament and his first opponent will be Santos Laguna.
Cruz Azul couldn’t reach a deal to sign Hugo Sánchez to manage the team, so they took another route and appointed Juan Reynoso as their new head coach for the 2021 Guardianes tournament. His first test will be against Santos Laguna on 10 January at the Corona stadium.
“This team is not sick”
Cruz Azul was eliminated dramatically by Pumas UNAM in the semifinals of the 2020 Guardianes tournament and the bosses decided to part ways with Robert Siboldi. The ‘Machine’ hasn't won the Liga MX title for 24 years and they hope Reynoso can lift this team up and take them back to the glory days.
“Today more than confidence we have to recover our memory. This is a team with a history and I believe that we all have the ability to put ourselves in the first places, even if the task is not easy. The team is not sick. I see there’s certain uncertainty in the club, but we have to start winning,” said Reynoso during an interview with TUDN.
On Monday, Reynoso held his first training session with the team to prepare for the game against Santos Laguna on Sunday. The new head coach wants to sign a central defender as soon as possible and will decide later this week who the starting goalkeeper will be in the beginning of this tournament.
“Since Igor Lichnovsky left we want to sign a central defender with his same qualities. We will not make a lot of changes with the roster and right now Jesús Corona could be our starting goalkeeper, but I will see how Sebastián Jurado works this week because he can fight for that starting role,” he added.
