Mirroring the music and theatre industries, Hollywood did not escape the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic last year. Filming was halted for series and features across the world and as lockdowns drove viewers to their couches, theater releases were postponed or cancelled in favour of release on streaming services. Cineworld, the world's second-largest cinema chain, closed its cinemas in October 2020, some permanently, affecting over 45,000 jobs in the US and United Kingdom.

The box office also took a beating due to covid-19. In early March 2020, it was predicted that the global box office could lose $5 billion as a result of the pandemic. Chinese war drama The Eight Hundred was the highest-grossing film of 2020, earning $468 million worldwide. This marks the first time since 2007 that the top-grossing film of a given year has earned less than $1 billion.

Netflix: one new movie a week throughout 2021

Streaming giant Netflix has just dropped a list of 70 movies it will release once a week in 2021. But look out for more, as this is just the announced slate so far.

In this sizzle trailer, there’s a taste of what’s to come this year.

Which actors star in the new Netflix releases for 2021?

Some highlights from the trailer include a look at upcoming comedy thriller Red Notice, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. Chris Hemsworth stars in Escape from Spiderhead, a sci-fi flick about two inmates who take part in a new drug test in exchange for shortened prison sentences.

A few more to look out for include Zack Snyder's zombie heist movie Army of the Dead, Amy Poehler's high school comedy drama Moxie, and satirical disaster film Don't Look Up, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio.
