Alcoyano will relish next Wednesday, as they take on Real Madrid at El Collao in the Spanish Cup third-round encounter, which is one of the hosts’ biggest games in their 92-year history.
Vicente Parras’ team will try to upset the Spanish giants in a competition that has traditionally offered a good possibility for the underdogs. However, it’s also true that fans have always been a key factor for the smaller clubs and this time, due to the coronavirus restrictions, Alcoyano's 4,850-seater stadium won’t host their supporters.
The right time for a huge upset?
After defeating Laredo and Huesca en route to the last 32, Alcoyano take on a team that don’t seem to be at their best, after being beaten by Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup’s semi-final.
But of course, even if Zinedine Zidane’s men are not being as solid as in other seasons, they are in second position in LaLiga, just behind the unstoppable Atlético de Madrid.
Alcoyano, without Raíllo and Garcés
The third-tier hosts won’t be able to call upon Manuel Raíllo and Rubén Garcés, but the rest of the squad are available to play against Los Blancos.
Parras will base his team’s possibilities on the 35-year-old midfielder Jony Ñíguez, brother of Atlético midfielder Saúl, while 41-year-old goalkeeper José Figueras will be in charge of facing the visitors’ attacking line.
Jona who missed the weekend's game against Hércules will return and he is set to battle Juli to feature from the start alongside El Ghezouani.
Madrid want to advance with a different XI
As for the visitors, Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos will have the chance to rest following injury concerns after the game against Athletic, meaning there could be a new defence line.
Andriy Lunin will have his opportunity in goal with Álvaro Odriozola, Eder Militao, Nacho Fernández and Marcelo as defenders.
Federico Valverde will likely play in midfield, while Martin Odegaard didn't travel with the rest of the team. Mariano Diaz and Vinicius Junior could partner with Casemiro and Marco Asensio in the attack.
