Real Madrid could face competition from Chelsea in their pursuit of Norwegian ace Erling Haaland.

Cash-rich Chelsea have already spent some €250 million since the start of the pandemic and the club’s Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich has given the green light to an investment of more than €100 million in Haaland, according to German paper Bild.

A move for the Haaland, one of the most promising talents in world football, would go a large way in helping the Blues’ quest to return to the top of the Premier League, where the last title came in 2017. If the Bild reports are correct, it will be major cause of concern for Madrid, who have had their sights set on Haaland for quite a while.

Haaland in hot demand – says agent Raiola

The 20-year-old goal machine arrived at Dortmund a little over a year ago. And while the player is very much content at the Bundesliga club, it seems he will be unlikely to see out his four-year deal at Signal Iduna Park as Europe’s elite circle around him.

According to his agent, Mino Raiola, who spoke recently to the BBC: "There are only ten teams that can afford to sign Haaland and give him a structure similar to what he has right now at Dortmund.”

Real Madrid is among those ten of course. But so too are Chelsea, who have gone on quite the shopping spree after their UEFA-sanctioned transfer ban ended in 2020. And with the financial backing of Abramovich, the Premier League giants would have no issues with financing the operation, even amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Haaland’s Chelsea arrival would spell trouble for Werner

Were Chelsea to sign Haaland, it could mean an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge for Timo Werner, who joined the club from Leipzig for €54 million last summer. It could also prompt the departure of Tammy Abraham, who would likely prefer not to renew his contract knowing the club would be betting on Haaland for the future.

For his part, Olivier Giroud would not have any problem staying on at Chelsea in the event that Haaland arrived, considering he is 34 and is at a very different stage of his career that than the two promising aforementioned youngsters.
