Peeep peeep peeeep! Manchester United have secured their third straight away win at Manchester City under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and in the process have ended their city rivals' club-record-equalling run of 28 games unbeaten, in addition to their 21-match winning streak.

United leapfrog Leicester back into second and have reduced the gap separating them and City - but the leaders remain 11 points clear and, barring the mother of all collapses, will surely be crowned champions despite today’s derby defeat.

Mahrez fires in a shot from the edge of the area that Henderson can only beat out as far as De Bruyne. He drives it back towards goal, the ball ricocheting off a crowd of bodies. City want a penalty for what they perceive as a handball in the box, but they don't get one.

United bring Brandon Williams on for Bruno Fernandes.

A second change for Manchester United, who replace Martial with the midfield steel of Nemanja Matic.

Fernandes heads a De Bruyne free-kick behind for a corner, which the Belgian will also take.

De Bruyne's delivery is flicked on towards the back post by Gündogan, but Stones can't quite get there in time to turn it home.

De Bruyne crosses for Sterling and Lindelöf slips, leaving the Englishman with plenty of space to get his head on the ball, but he directs his effort well, well wide.

It's all being played in the United half.

Walker crosses for Stones, but the centre-back heads over.

Mahrez clips a neat ball into the box to Foden, who has a golden opportunity to shoot if he can bring it under control. But he can't; Greenwood gets a toe to the ball, and United clear.

What a chance for Sterling! He really has to make it 2-1 there.

Walker curls over a wonderful cross from the right that finds Sterling all on his own at the back post... but the forward scuffs his finish wide from point-blank range!

Shaw is down with some sort of ache and pain, but after a brief stoppage for treatment, he's back into the action.

Close from Foden! It's fine attacking play from the youngster, who carries the ball forward before feeding it right to Mahrez. The Algerian turns it on to De Bruyne, whose low ball to the near post finds Foden. He turns and shoots - but sends his strike just past Henderson's far post!

United make their first change, and it's an enforced one. Mason Greenwood is on for Marcus Rashford, who is limping heavily after a challenge with Mahrez.

City make their second substitution, replacing Gabriel Jesus with Phil Foden.

What a chance for Martial! It really should be 3-0. McTominay carries the ball towards the City box and, having seemed to have overrun it, beats Dias to a tackle from which the ball squirts to Martial all on his own just inside the area.

The Frenchman only has Ederson to beat, but can't! The keeper gets down to beat out his effort!

Martial plays a couple of one-twos on his way into the City box before losing it. However, City give it straight to Rashford inside their own area - and, perhaps unsurprisingly, the Englishman seems taken aback to find the ball at his feet.

He has space to shoot, but instead opts to play it to Martial and has his pass cut out.

Manchester City make their first change, bringing Kyle Walker on at right-back in place of João Cancelo. Cancelo has been one of the players of the Premier League season, but it hasn't been his day today.

Again Jesus is involved, Mahrez playing the ball out to the striker to sidefoot a low cross towards Sterling's run to the back post, but the pass is overhit.

De Bruyne carries the ball at speed into the United half before releasing Jesus on the right. He scurries past Shaw and into the box, but the defender gets back to block the Brazilian's attempted cross. Jesus wants a penalty for Shaw's challenge, but he definitely isn't getting one.

Manchester City win a corner, which De Bruyne plays to Mahrez for the Algerian to volley at goal from the edge of the box. He absolutely skies his effort, however.

Shaw sees yellow after blocking off Mahrez, who certainly felt that.

Fernandes crosses from the right, his delivery deflecting off Dias' head and looping up to Martial at the back post. The Frenchman hurls himself at the ball to send a header towards Ederson's goal, but he can't generate the power he needs and the City goalkeeper clutches hold of it with ease.

United are now wreaking absolute havoc on the break. Martial scampers towards the City box before playing it to the right to James, who advances into the area.

Fernandes has peeled off into acres of shooting space at the top of the box, but James has only one thing in his mind. His shot is deflected off target, and Fernandes is not at all happy that he didn't get the pass.

We just may be heading for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's third win in three at the Etihad as United boss. It'll also be the first time that the Red Devils have won three in a row away to their crosstown rivals since they managed it between 1993 and 2000.

Sterling looks to lead an instant reply from the hosts, running at Wan-Bissaka and cutting inside to shoot, but firing right at Henderson.

City then win a free-kick on the left, which Zinchenko delivers - but sends it straight down Henderson's gullet.

Rodri hits the woodwork! It's lovely build-up play from Manchester City.

Mahrez plays the ball into Jesus with his back to goal on the penalty spot, and the Brazilian touches it back to Rodri to shoot - but his effort bounces off the corner of post and bar, and behind!

United last surrendered HT lead in the league six and half years ago

Here's an interesting stat from Opta, who note that Manchester United have not lost any of the last 102 Premier League games in which they have been ahead at half time, stretching back to September 2014.

Peeep peeep peeep! Anthony Taylor brings the first half to a close. United lead through Bruno Fernandes' second-minute penalty and, as things stand, will go back into second in the Premier League and reduce City's lead at the top to a still not inconsiderable 11 points.

City have been getting closer to an equaliser, though.

So close from Mahrez! De Bruyne plays the ball out to the Algerian on the right, and his cross-cum-shot flies across goal and just wide, with a stretching Jesus unable to connect at the far post.

In his efforts to get to the ball, Jesus collides with the upright at some speed, but he's up and will be OK.

There'll be one minute of added time at the Etihad.

Fernandes brings down Rodri 25 yards or so out from the United goal, and City have a very dangerous-looking free-kick. De Bruyne stands over it... but Henderson tips it over the bar! It was going over anyway.

When United finally clear the resulting corner, James leads the counter-attack before feeding Rashford on the left. He plays it to Fernandes, who tries to release Martial into the box on the right, but the Portuguese gets his pass wrong and it dribbles out for a City goal-kick.

That's a crucial intervention from Maguire! De Bruyne advances to the left-hand byline before lifting a cross towards Jesus at the back post, but just as the Brazilian is preparing to turn the ball towards goal from point-blank range, Maguire gets his head to it to direct it away from the danger area.

There's a shooting chance for Gündogan - but he doesn't hit it quite truly, and it's comfortable for Henderson. Mahrez ran at the Manchester United defence and, when he was dispossessed, the loose ball ran to Gündogan. He jinked his way into space to shoot just inside the United area, but Lindelöf did just enough to put him off.

Now Gündogan overhits a pass for Sterling, albeit slightly more excusably. The German collects and turns just inside the United half, before threading a through ball in behind the visiting defence for Sterling to run on to... but Henderson is out quickly to scoop it up.

De Bruyne feeds Sterling in the left-hand channel, with Gündogan overlapping him into the penalty area - but the England international overhits his pass to and it flies out for a United goal-kick. Sterling's frustration with himself is apparent.

Harry Maguire earns the first yellow card of the afternoon after a taking a right old swipe at Gabriel Jesus' shins.

Mahrez jinks into the United box from the right, before firing a low ball across goal that is cleared by Maguire. Moments later, Cancelo's shot from outside of the box is deflected behind for a corner, which comes to nought.

United are struggling to get out of their half now.

Raheem Sterling wants a penalty... but he is not getting one. He scuttles into the United box from the left, carrying the ball across the area as he tries to work himself a yard of space to shoot, before tumbling to the turf under the challenge of Fred. Nothing doing, says referee Anthony Taylor.

De Bruyne then feeds Zinchenko to shoot from 25 yards, but Henderson does well to beat out the Ukrainian's drive!

Rodri's shot is blocked by Lindelöf, but back come City, who are finally enjoying a prolonged period inside the United half. The hosts work it out to Cancelo, who cuts inside Shaw and clips a ball across the United six-yard box, but the visitors clear.

The Red Devils play it out to the left to Rashford, who carries the ball at speed into the City half, but is run off it by three sky-blue shirts.

Gabriel Jesus carves out a yard or two of shooting space on the edge of the Manchester United box, but his effort is blocked by Lindelöf. A minute later, Sterling plays the ball into Gündogan, who turns 20 yards out and fires a shot towards Henderson's left-hand top corner, but directs his strike a yard or two wide of the upright.

Bruno Fernandes looks to loft a bouncing ball over the top for Rashford to run in on Ederson, but Stones sprints back to get to the ball before the Manchester United man.

However, United win it right back and get Rashford running at a back-pedalling City defence. He unleashes a low strike that's hit powerfully enough and bounces in front of Ederson, but is gatherered by the Brazilian at the second attempt.

Earliest league goal City have let in at the Etihad

According to football stats specialists Opta, that Fernandes penalty after 101 seconds is the earliest goal Manchester City have ever conceded in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium.

This is also the first time in 20 Premier League games that City have been behind on the scoreboard.

Manchester United win a free-kick on the left that Shaw delivers, but Dias is there to head clear.

Up the other end, City create their first attacking openings. First, Kevin de Bruyne fizzes a low cross towards the United penalty spot, where Harry Maguire is in position to boot it away.

Shortly afterwards, Ilkay Gündogan - who of course has been in fine scoring form this term, bagging 13 goals in all competitions - gets the ball out of his feet and lets fly from 25 yards, but it's comfortable for Dean Henderson.

Blimey, United have made a lightning start, and City are still in the dressing room. First the visitors win it back deep in the hosts' half and Ruben Dias has to look alive to nick the ball off Marcus Rashford's toes as the forward prepares to shoot from the edge of the box.

Back come United moments later, Rashford slipping Luke Shaw into crossing space just inside the City area, only for the left-back to be run off the ball. However, Joao Cancelo promptly gives it right back to Shaw, who shoots from 10 yards or so - but can't get enough on his strike, and a grateful Ederson grabs hold.

What a start! Gabriel Jesus is deemed to have brought down Anthony Martial just inside the Manchester City box, and Manchester United have the chance to take an instant lead from the spot!

Manchester City’s run of 21 straight wins in all competitions leaves them one off equalling the 22 successive victories registered by Real Madrid in the 2014/15 season, and two shy of Bayern Munich's 23-game winning run last season.

Beyond that, they have Ajax’s sequence of 25 consecutive wins from 1995 to aim for, and the top-level world record of 27 straight victories set by Welsh club New Saints in 2016/17.

In the Premier League, meanwhile, Pep Guardiola's men are on 15 wins on the trot - three short of the record of 18 that they share with Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Guardiola’s City managed that run in 2017, before the Reds equalled it last year.

Not conceding Premier League title just yet:

"There are still 11 games to go in the Premier League. I have always said, let's get to at least March and April before we talk about a title race. You don't talk about title races after 18 to 19 games. We have given ourselves a very good chance of improving on last season by the position we're in. I'd rather be in the position we're in now, compared to the situation we were in last season. But of course, in the Premier League, there are lots of quality teams. What we can control is ourselves and if we do our jobs and get as many points as I think we can do, I'm sure we'll be up there."

"I know how difficult United are. Every year they get better from the previous season. They [have gone] more than one year not losing away and they have good results at the Etihad. We have the good opportunity to increase the distance. We spoke in training about what we have to do to beat them."

Three changes for City, four for United

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola makes three changes to the side that started Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Wolves, as Oleksandr Zinchenko, John Stones and Ilkay Gündogan return to the Premier League leaders' XI in place of Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva.

Meanwhile, there are four changes to the United team that began Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace. Victor Lindelöf returns from a back problem to play in defence, while Scott McTominay is in for Nemanja Matic in midfield. In attack, Daniel James and Anthony Martial are back in the side - Martial having overcome a knee complaint - with Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani making way.

In the absence of David de Gea, who is in Spain following the birth of his first child, goalkeeper Dean Henderson makes a second straight Premier League start for United for the first time.

Good afternoon! Welcome to our live coverage of a Manchester derby in which Pep Guardiola’s sizzling City side can stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League to 15 points, but must end United’s 21-game unbeaten away run if they are to do so.

City are on a streak of their own, of course, having won their last 21 games in all competitions as part of a club-record-equalling sequence of 28 matches undefeated. 

The hosts therefore not only have the chance to take another step towards the title today - though let’s be honest, the Premier League trophy is surely going back to the Etihad Stadium whatever the score against their city rivals - but also to go down in the history books.

However, Guardiola’s men are up against a United side who have won at the Etihad both times Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought them to the stadium.

As well as pushing the Red Devils back into second ahead of Leicester, an away victory today would make it three straight United wins at the ground for the first time since City moved in.
