REAL MADRID

Varane considers leaving Real Madrid in the summer

AS understands that the French defender is in favour of a move away from Madrid. The Spanish champions would listen to offers if he asks to leave with his contract ending in 2022.

MadridUpdate:

Raphael Varane's future at Real Madrid is up in the air with the French defender's contract running until June 2022. He has not renewed his current deal and is seriously considering the option of a transfer request in the summer, AS understands. This situation is not new. In 2019, he also wanted to leave the club, however Zidane's return made him change his mind. The Frenchman now has a very different position of strength from two years ago: if Madrid do not sell him this summer he could go on a free next season.

Real Madrid have been made aware of this situation through the player's entourage and their current intention is to listen to offers when the season ends. Madrid also recognise that the situation is difficult to reverse as Varane will be 28 when the current season ends and he believes it is time to try a new experience, possibly in the Premier League. He joined Madrid from Lens in 2011, when he was 18 years old, which is how he has spent almost his entire career at the Santiago Bernabéu. If he signs another long-term contract with Los Blancos, his option of trying another league in the prime of his career would be gone.

Madrid are confident of being able to convince Varane to stay in the Spanish capital, although they have decided that if the defender says that he does not want to renew, they will listen to offers that come in.

Offer to Alaba

The club's hierarchy are aware that Varane could ask to leave this coming summer. For this reason, they have held talks with several centre-backs, with the idea of looking for a replacement for the Frenchman and not Sergio Ramos, who has an offer on the table to which he has not yet accepted. There are three names that Madrid could potentially replace Varane with: David Alaba, Pau Torres and Jules Koundé. They have already made an offer to Alaba, while the other two would be the ideal candidates to bring in from the sale of Varane.
