The knockout stage has moved beyond the Round of 16, leaving just eight teams in contention for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title as the quarterfinals loom. But before the action resumes, the tournament has its first day without a match since it kicked off on June 11, when Mexico beat South Africa... remember that?

Who is left in the World Cup?

Morocco was the first team to reach the quarterfinals after defeating Canada in the opening Round of 16 match. The Atlas Lions then learned they would face France, which edged Paraguay 1-0 to advance.

On the other side of the bracket, Norway pulled off one of the tournament’s biggest surprises, defeating Brazil 2-1 behind standout performances from Erling Haaland and Ørjan Nyland. The Norwegians will now face England, which eliminated Mexico with a 3-2 victory.

Spain had to grind out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Portugal to reach the quarterfinals, where it will meet Belgium after the Red Devils cruised past the United States 4-1.

The final quarterfinal will feature Argentina against Switzerland. Argentina once again had to come from behind, defeating Egypt 3-2 after another dramatic performance, while Switzerland advanced by beating Colombia in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw.
