The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the organization responsible for overseeing all projects related the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has made a commitment to providing more services for disabled people at the 2022 tournament than at any World Cup in history.
This commitment was reiterated during a virtual event hosted by Nozhat Shamim Khan, president of the Qatar National Human Rights Committee, held on the periphery of the fortieth meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council, during which one of the topics addressed was the rights of disabled people as spectators at sporting events, as well as promoting their rightful participation in sporting activities.
During the conference Bedor Al Mir, Director of Sustainability at the SC, spoke about the committee’s efforts to provide a World Cup open to everybody and highlighted the progress made in this area and above all the projects designed to ensure an extraordinary experience at the World Cup for disabled supporters.
Qatar to provide disabled fans with increased accesibility
Regarding Qatar’s preparations to receive more than a million fans during the 2022 tournament, Al Mir laid out the fan experience from arriving in Qatar to buying tickets, with FIFA dedicating a section on its website for disabled supporters.
Qatar Airways will also be offering a special package of services for disabled passengers and is studying the mechanism for best providing these services during the tournament while the Qatar authorities will be making provisions for disabled fans including rooms at luxury hotels and in floating tourist hotels.
Qatar will also be taking steps to make host stadiums more accessible with ramps at entry and exit points as well as providing specially designed seating and dedicated volunteers.
Al Mir also stated that disabled fans will be able to enjoy the FIFA Fan Festival experience, with FIFA standards applied to all aspects of accessibility at the event.
