Barcelona 1-0 Valladolid: as it happened

Report by Richard Martin

Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembélé struck in stoppage time to snatch a vital 1-0 win at home to Real Valladolid in La Liga on Monday to pull his side one point behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

Valladolid produced with a disciplined yet bold performance and could have taken an early lead when Kenan Kodro headed against the bar, while Roque Mesa had two clear sights at goal from outside the box but failed to hit the target each time.

Barca came close to scoring right before halftime when their former goalkeeper Jordi Masip palmed a strike from Pedri on to the post. The keeper thwarted Dembélé in the second half and then watched on in relief as Antoine Griezmann headed the rebound just wide.

The Catalans were dealt a helping hand when Valladolid's Oscar Plano was sent off in the 79th minute for a challenge on Dembele. They finally took advantage when the French forward caught a loose ball in the air with his left foot, slamming it inside the near post.

A sixth consecutive league win for Ronald Koeman's side took them back into second place and moved them on to 65 points, two above third-placed Real Madrid and one behind Atletico, who were beaten 1-0 at Sevilla on Sunday.

Barcelona are now just one point behind Atlético Madrid at the top of the table and take on Real Madrid on Saturday in Valdebebas.

A huge three points for Barcelona as they win it right at the death thanks to Dembélé's strike.

There have been 4 minutes added on at the end of the 90.

It looks like Barcelona have stolen all three points in the last couple of minutes.

Dembélé scores right at the death. It's a fine volley at the back post.

Valladolid will play the last 10 minutes with 10 men.

It should be a yellow. Plano's attempted tackle is in no way dangerous. Yellow at the most.

80

Plano has been sent off and all the Valladolid players surround the ref. That is very harsh!

69

Masip has been the busier of the two keepers tonight. Barcelona continue to push forward. Messi's corner lands into the middle of the box. Nobody is on the end of it to the relief of Pucela manager Sergio.

59

Massive Masip save!!

Dembélé's strike is parried away, Griezmann gets a head to it but it goes wide of the empty net.

Barcelona are expected to make a couple of changes coming up to the half-hour mark.

57

OLAZA!

What a chance! Olaza flies down the left wing, makes room for a shot, before driving a left-footed strike from the edge of the box into Ter Stegen's side-netting.

Bruno is now back on his feet and ready to go. 0-0

54

Bruno is down for Valladolid. The referee hs stopped the game. He looks to be in some agony.

Messi sends his free-kick straight into the wall.

This is perfect range for Messi, about 25 yards out.

Valladolid have surprised most of us so far tonight. They could be ahead at the break but will be pleased with how the opening 45' has gone.

HT: Barcelona 0-0 Valladolid

45+1

PEDRI! The midfielder's shot is pushed onto the post by Masip.

43

Mingueza becomes the second Barca player to get booked. Silly foul really. Pulls Kodro to the ground. Griezmann is also on a yellow.

42

Alba looks for Messi with a cross to the near post. Masip comes and collects it. A frustrating opening 45 for Messi.

38

Patient play from Barca. Eventually, it falls to Messi but some good Valladolid defending clears the danger. 0-0

32

Dembélé heads over from a Griezmann cross. No real power on the header from the in-form forward.

27

Valladolid have been the better of the two sides in the opening half an hour.

25

Huge holes in the Barca team. Roque Mesa picks it up deep into the Barca half, nobody closes him down before his effort sails way over the bar from just inside the box. Two shots in two minutes from Roque Mesa.

This time it's Roque Mesa!

The former Swansea midfielder strikes over from distance. More positive play from Sergio's side.

22

Valladolid go close again. Ter Stegen comes out to block the cross. The away side have started really well.

20

Frenkie de Jong is everywhere tonight. As Barca transition he becomes a central midfielder from a sweeper role.

16

Messi's free-kick flies a couple of yards wide. Unlike the Argentine. 0-0

14

Barca free-kick in a very dangerous position...

Messi was taken out and Messi will take this one of course!

12

Griezmann goes down after a nasty challenge from Alcaraz. The Frenchman dusts himself down. It was a very nasty elbow.

10

Mingueza hits the target with a bouncing header from a corner..It's easy for Masip, who collects it calmly.

Kodro's header comes crashing back off the bar. Barca could be 1-0 down. 0-0

9

OFF THE POST! Valladolid go so close to breaking the deadlock.

8

Some nice play from Barca, with Messi and Griezmann linking up. The Frenchman tries to pick out Alba at the back post but there's too much on it. 0-0

Messi's fine form continues

Messi has been directly involved in 23 league goals in 2021 - 16 goals and seven assists - which is more than any other player in the top five European leagues.

The Argentinian has had a direct hand in eight goals in his last four LaLiga games against Real Valladolid - four goals and four assists.

Those goal involvements have helped Barca to 13 wins in their previous 14 LaLiga games against Valladolid, with the only exception being a 1-0 defeat away from home in March 2014.

Sergio Gonzalez's side have won just one of their past 11 league games, but Koeman will not take Monday's opponents lightly.

Messi and De Jong start for Barça

Ronald Koeman has named Lionel Messi and Frenkie de Jong in his starting XI for the visit of Valladolid to Camp Nou ahead of next week's El Clásico, despite both players being one booking away from a suspension.

Barcelona will be looking to extend their 18-match unbeaten run in LaLiga.

"We know that these two players are one card away, but it is not the time to rest players due to cards or freshness," he said at Sunday's pre-match news conference.

Koeman: "We're going to do everything we can to ensure that Messi stays"

On Valladolid

We know that Valladolid have players who are either ruled out by injury or Covid. Despite the break, the players have returned in great spirits. We know what we are playing for and we have to win.

Could it be a tricky game?

We have to be prepared for Valladolid. It's going to be difficult, even if they have players who are out. If we go into the game with energy and rhythm, that will help. I am not taking anything for granted, if we want to win, we will need to work for it.

Messi and De Jong are one booking away from being suspended and could miss El Clásico, have you thought about resting them?

We know, the risk is always there, but now isn't the moment to rest. They both know that. We have to take one game at a time and put out our best possible team in every game.

Would it be helpful to have a deadline to know Messi will decide?

It's a very important issue. We are going to do everything we possibly can to ensure that he stays. But right now, what matters is the game [vs Valladolid]. Things regarding the future are up to the president. We just focus on our games.

Pucela hit with covid cases

Valladolid were forced to suspend a training session last week after Roberto Jiménez tested positive for covid-19. According to the report, in addition to the keeper a further six players at Valladolid tested positive for the virus.

The last time the side from Castilla y Leon managed to secure a point in the Catalan capital was back in 2003.

Barcelona have won 13 of their previous 14 LaLiga games against Valladolid, with the only exception being a 1-0 defeat away from home in March 2014.
