Real Madrid facing punishment for Super League involvement

Real Madrid and Juventus could face stiff punishment from UEFA for being the ringleaders behind the split from UEFA. Legally, it looks unlikely that Los Blancos could be kicked out of the Champions League, but there is a possibility that they might be banned from taking part in next season's tournament. That would be the most aggressive measure which the members of UEFA's Executive Committee could take within their rules and regulations.

One-year ban from European competition

In Italy, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that opinion among committee members is divided. There are those who are calling for severe punishment, which would be banning Madrid from European competition for one year, while others are in favour of some kind kind of reprieve if that is a way of ensuring the crisis doesn't spiral out of control. The issue will be discussed and both arguments listened to in a meeting in Nyon on Friday.

UEFA have been benevolent with the clubs who quickly took a step back from their plans to be part of a new Super League. President Aleksander Ceferin extended a hand to the English and Italian clubs who have reversed out of the project and been "welcomed back into the fold". He has also excused Barcelona, explaining that Joan Laporta had informed him of his worries about the crisis at the club. However, Madrid have not retracted and Juventus were ambiguous in their statement. UEFA must decided whether to punish the Italians or not. It promises to be an internal debate which will cause sparks to fly one way or another...
