Major League Soccer has been improving year after year and prior to the start of each season, many young players from Latin America are deciding to continue their career in the United States, before making the jump to a European club.

MLS making big steps

It is true that the MLS as a league has improved a lot since it first started 25 years ago, but its teams have struggled to win international tournaments. Major League Soccer sides have never won the CONCACAF Champions League under its current format since 2008-09 and therefore have not participated in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Before the competition entered its new format it was called the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Los Angeles Galaxy won the regional championship in 2000, becoming the second MLS club ever to win the tournament. But things have changed and in last years’ final LAFC lost 1-0 to Tigres UANL thanks to a late goal from André-Pierre Gignac. Also in 2018, Toronto FC made it to the final but lost 4-2 on aggregate against Chivas.

According to the midfielder from Inter Miami CF, Rodolfo Pizarro, MLS is about to surpass in quality and players the Liga MX in the near future. The Mexican international has played for Pachuca, Chivas and Monterrey in the Liga MX and as he entered his second year in MLS he gave his opinion about both leagues.

I think MLS is almost at the same level as the Liga MX now and the latest results in this years’ Concachampions might be ‘tricky.’ But I believe that the MLS will win the tournament in the next two years,” he said.
