LaLiga president Javier Tebas signs a multi-million contract with Disney

According to multiple reports, the LaLiga president will confirm the news later this week and the deal will exceed $500 million in TV rights.

Estados UnidosUpdate:
LaLiga president Javier Tebas signs a multi-million contract with Disney

Disney and the LaLiga president Javier Tebas are expected to announce the new media rights for the Spanish league later this week. With the new deal on the table ESPN will hold the English and Spanish media rights for LaLiga that will begin August 2021 for the upcoming season. This new deal with Disney, which owns ESPN, will exceed 500 million dollars in television rights.

According to El Confidencial and World Soccer Talk, BeIN Sports will no longer transmit the LaLiga games in the United States even though they had a contract that was set to expire in 2024. The channel controlled by Al Jazeera first acquired the rights for LaLiga in 2012 and three years later they renewed their contract until 2024.

BeIN sports with carriage issues

Unfortunately things haven’t been working out as planned since 2019 with BeIN sports and their coverage of LaLiga due to their limited distribution of the matches. This is because the channel controlled by Al Jazeera couldn’t renew their contracts with two major platforms providing TV services, which prevents people from watching the games every matchday.

“The United States is the largest ever”

On Tuesday, Tebas talked about the popularity of LaLiga in the United States and the importance of the distribution of television broadcasting rights across the nation. “The United States is the largest ever,” he said at a ‘sports breakfast’ in the newspaper Europa Press.

At the end of this week, we will announce a very important topic related to audiovisual rights at the international level. I cannot and must not disclose anything, but the matter has passed for a year and a half during the period of the coronavirus outbreak,” he added.

Message to Florentino Pérez who said “football was dying”

When Florentino [Pérez] said he was coming to save Premier League football, I didn’t laugh, but it made me so sad. The European Union cannot remain inactive, but the biggest punishment has been social protest. Infantino paid, and I personally said to him. ‘It is not true that football will be destroyed in three years.’”
