On 20 May, Governor of Maryland Larry Hogan announced that the state would be creating a covid-19 vaccine lottery dubbed the $2 Million VaxCash Promotion. Those who have received at least one dose of a vaccine would be automatically entered to win $40,000, or the grand prize of $400,000. Beginning on 25 May through 3 July, the state will select one winner who will take home a $40,000 prize. On the Fourth of July, the lottery will end with one person being selected to win $400,000.

To date, sixty-eight percent of those in Maryland have received at least one dose of a vaccine. These numbers are just a few points short of the 70% benchmark the President would like to see across the country before the Fourth of July. Since Gov. Logan announced the vaccine lottery, the average number of doses administered each day has nearly doubled from 479 in the five days before the announcement to 849 doses in the five days after. More female residents have received a dose in Maryland, forming around fifty-five percent of those vaccinated.

Do I need to apply?

No. All those who have received a dose within the state and who are eighteen or older will automatically be added to the pool from which winners will be selected.

The Maryland Department of Health maintains an updated list of all those who have been vaccinated. To ensure confidentiality, each person will be assigned a unique identification number. Then, the Maryland Lottery will use a random number generator to select a winner which will be given to the health authority and the winner will be named.

Where do the funds come from?

Unlike other states that are using funds allocated to their state through the American Rescue Plan, the $2 Million VaxCash Promotion is paid for entirely through the state Lottery’s marketing budget.

What other states have announced these programs?

Ohio was the first state to announce a lottery program.

In April, the state of Ohio administered 447,542 doses of covid-19 vaccines. These numbers began to slow and the government decided to implement a lottery for those who had received a vaccine. In the eleven days before the announcement, the state-administered 146,602 doses. In the eleven days after the announcement, that number increased to 264,573. With a few days left in the month, the state is on track to surpass its April figures.

Colorado became the latest state to enact this sort of program to encourage vaccination.

On 25 May, Governor Jared Polis announced the Colorado Comeback Cash Vaccine Drawing. The contest will last five weeks and each week one person will be selected to win one million dollars. Coloradans can expect to be the winners to be announced each Friday starting 4 June and ending on 7 July.
