E3 2021
After missing E3 2021, will Sony (PlayStation) have a State of Play in the summer? When?
Sony didn't participate in E3 2021 yet the company might host its own event, a new State of Play event revealing new information on upcoming games.
Sony (PlayStation) didn't attend E3 2021 as the company didn't in 2019 and 2020 (despite the latter being canceled finally). The reasons, as stated two years ago, seem to be the same: to use their own way to communicate and engage with their audience. This means that the State of Play events keep the spotlight on the Japanese company's wares.
After missing E3, the question many users might be asking is what to expect from Sony this summer. Will a State of Play happen? To answer this question, it is necessary to look back at what PlayStation did in the past and its upcoming games on the horizon.
Can a State of Play happen in summer 2021?
Sony is launching Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on 11 June. Horizon Forbidden West gameplay was revealed on 27 May State of Play and God of War 2 has been announced to be moved to 2022. Besides those, there are many other titles coming to PlayStation (not necessarily exclusives) that might be showcased. Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Solar Ash, Little Devil Inside, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Forspoken (previously called Project Athia), Pragmata or the new IP being developed by Bend Studios (Days Gone). Regarding games, Sony has a wide assortment of them to show, without considering those yet to be revealed.
Concerning when a State of Play could be held, the last one happened on 27 May. The previous ones in 2021 took place on 29 April 2021 and 25 February. In 2020 it held another 3 events on 14 May, 27 May, and 6 August. The events occurred months ahead of upcoming big releases and usually announced just a few days in advance. The only games launching in summer and the near after are Kena: Bridge of Spirits and Ghostwire: Tokyo. A State of Play could serve to highlight these titles as well as to present new information and tease future titles. Grounded in pure speculation, June could be the month for it if Sony is looking to catch user attention after E3 2021 or maybe in July as Electronic Arts is doing with its own event.
