The Atlanta Hawks are on to the Eastern Conference Finals after defeating the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7 in Philly. Kevin Huerter was the elimination game hero, setting a new playoff career high in the Hawks 103-96 win.
Lead never stretched past 7 in Game 7
As we saw all series long, there was very little between these two team, and Game 7 proved that yet against. The biggest lead for either side was seven points, as both teams battled blow for blow until the end. There were 20 lead changes and 19 ties in a game that had very few runs for either team.
Trae Young struggled for most of the game, but warmed up just in time to help close the Sixers out. Kevin Huertel did the heavy lifting on the offensive end for Atlanta, scoring 24 points on 10-18 shooting.
Huertel was paired up with Seth Curry, and the 6’8’ Hawks sharp shooter was able to take advantage of the size mismatch.
Embiid's fantastic series despite knee injury
Much was made of Joel Embiid and the status of his right knee which suffered a cartilage tear. While the MVP nominee battled through the pain and had a fantastic series averaging over 30 ponts and 12 rebounds a game.
There were moments in which he did look like it was bothering. The former Kansas Jayhawk posted yet another brilliant performance scoring 31 points and 11 rebounds. Tobias Harris followed up with 24 points for Philadelphia.
Howard foul ruled flagrant after review
The game changing moment came late in the third quarter when Dwight Howard was called for an flagrant foul after official review. Howard went for the block under the basket but his forearm hit John Collins on the follow through. The four point sequence sparked a 12-6 run that put Atlanta up by five heading into the fourth.
Embiid dropped 7 quick points to start the fourth while the Hawks started 0-7 from the field. Philly climbed out to as many as four, but the lead was short lived as Huertel continued to exploit the mismatch against Curry.
Young with a big bucket late after rough shooting night
The baton was then handed off to Young who finished off the race with one of his signature 30 footers late in the game. Young finished the game with 21 points on 5-23 shooting. A steal and score from Danilo Gallinari put the Hawks up six and that was enough to close out the top seeded Sixers.
The Hawks fifth road win this postseason sends them to their first Conference Final since 2015 when they were swept by Cleveland. Game One of the against the Milwaukee Bucks is set for Wednesday at 8:30 pm ET from the Fiserv Forum.

The Sixers responded in Game 6 in Atlanta after blowing a 26 point Game 5 lead. Seth Curry was fantastic, hitting six three pointers on his way to a 24 points night.
After the 104-99 win Curry was asked about this series going the distance, saying "It's fun. It's a lot of fun," he added, “That's a great team over there. ... You've just got to weather the storm and come back at them at the other end."
Four of this series six games have been decided by 5 points or less which has made for wonderfully dramatic basketball, and what better way to end a dramatic series then with a do-or-die game with a place in the Conference Finals on the line.
MVP nominee Joel Embiid has been under the microscope, after suffering a small tear in the cartilage in his right knee. He went tot he locker room in the second quarter of Game 4, and although returning he went 0-12 from the field.
Embiid responded in the next game, scoring 37 points in a losing effort in Game 5. The Sixers big man had 22 points and 13 rebounds, but instead of being frustrated with his knee after the Game 6 win he had some words for the refs saying "I just want it called both ways," Embiid said. "If we are going to call something like nothing on their point guard (Trae Young), it should be the same way when they call the same thing on me if I get touched."
Atlanta star guard Trae Young is averaging over 30 points a game in this series, and has put up 34 and 39 in the last two games. He will be needed tonight for the biggest game in Atlanta Hawks history in over a decade.
Young has got help along the way, in the form of Bogdan Bogdanovic and John Collins, and both will be key tonight in Game 7.
Embiiid was boosted by Seth Curry in the last game, and he will need some more help from his supporting cast tonight. Ben Simmons has been underwhelming in this series, but there is still time for the Aussie to have a huge night in the biggest game of his career.
