Megan Rapinoe under fire after a tweet she posted 10 years ago
The United States Women’s national team player published what is being described as a ‘racist’ tweet over a decade ago saying that one of her teammates looked ‘asian with those closed eyes.’
Earlier this week, Megan Rapinoe became one of the new faces of Victoria’s Secret and she has been the voice of the United States Women’s national team fighting for equal pay in the courts since last year. The veteran striker is currently in the USWNT camp as they prepare to defend the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics next month.
"We are proud to bring together an unparalleled group of trailblazing partners who share a common goal to drive positive change," the company said in a statement. "These extraordinary partners, with their unique backgrounds, interests and passions will collaborate with us to create revolutionary product collections, compelling and inspiring content, new internal associate programs and rally support for causes vital to women."
‘Racist’ tweet has resurfaced
On 19 May 2011, Rapinoe posted a tweet that said, “you look asian with those closed eyes,” and it has recently resurfaced sparking anger on social media. It is not completely clear who was she responding to or what the original message said that she was replying to.
That said, according to Sports Room, Rapinoe was replying to a user who no longer appears on Twitter, a former USWNT player, Natasha Kai. “The tweet is bad, but this is the real sin,'' said one trivial comment relating to the device used.
