Alex Morgan says she is fighting for equal pay for her daughter

Last month, a judge in California approved a partial deal between the US Soccer federation and the United States Women’s national team in their dispute over equal pay and unequal working conditions. US District Judge R. Gary Klausner approved the settlement and with this new deal the women’s national team will be given charter flights, hotel accommodation, venue selection and professional support staff.

The fight continues as the USMNT is still demanding more than $66 million in damages under the Equal Pay Act and Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There has been progress in the demand, but there is still a long way to go. During an interview with ESPN, veteran striker and two-time World Cup winner with the USWNT, Alex Morgan, said that even if she retires before the demand is over, it will be good for future generations.

The fight that we are doing right now for equal pay does not mean that we will achieve it in the short term. We are not going to get the equal pay right away, but it may be done by the time my daughter [Charlie] plays soccer and she will not suffer what we suffered,” Morgan told ESPN.

The 31-year-old returned to the national team earlier this year for the first time since the conclusion of the 2019 Women’s World Cup. She took some time off due to her pregnancy last year and she finally gave birth in May 2020. Then she was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur where she made her return to the pitch in December.

Morgan wants to keep adding to her legacy with the USWNT now that she has returned and with the tournaments ahead this year, like the Tokyo Olympics this summer. “I want to show that I deserve to be at the top. I want to be the best player that I can be, that I can be a valuable member of the team after being a mother,” she added.
