The first installment of Fast and Furious, released in 2001, launched a franchise that has lasted 20 years. After all that time, Justin Lin who has directed four of the installments says "I came back because there was something new." But just how long can that newness go on for?

The release of the most recent installment, Fast and Furious 9 (F9), due to hit cinemas in April 2020 was put on hold due to the covid-19 pandemic. It bucked the trend, along with the release of James Bond: No Time to Die, of moving to streaming platforms last year. This was partially to secure a better draw at the box office but also so that the fans could truly experience on the big screen what has kept Fast and Furious devotees coming back again and again.

It appears that was the right call with F9 already speeding to a great start looking to pull in a record $66 million in estimated box office ticket sales in North America and $300 million to date in other markets.

Fast and Furious 9 plot

What started as a movie about illegal car racing in Los Angeles has become more and more spectacular along the lines of the James Bond or Mission Impossible movies taking its locations global. This time around, the franchise will see Dom and his crew globe-trotting again and even going into space. Besides leaving Earth’s atmosphere, the Fast and Furious series will explore other new territory.

Director Justin Lin told the BBC “We're 20 years in, and to be able to explore this theme of family, but through blood, which is something that we'd never done before.”

Dom’s estranged younger brother Jakob, played by John Cena, is recruited by Cipher to take revenge on Dom and his team. Dom forced his younger brother into exile after he realized that Jakob was responsible for the death of their father. Always trying to be better than Dom, Jakob has become the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver ever. He will lead Dom and his team on a chase around the world as both try to get their hands on Project Aires, a weapons hacking device.

How many more Fast and Furious movies are coming?

All good things must come to an end but fans of the Fast Saga can rest assured that they will be able to enjoy another sometime next year. Fast and Furious 10 will be the last in the series "With the Saga, I feel like it's the right choice, the right move,” Lin said. "We can't always feel like we're going to go on forever," he added.

That doesn’t mean that the creators of the fast, action-packed movies are done. "Because of our journey, there have been all of those characters that have joined us in the universe. Even working on Fast 9, I felt like I had four scripts,” Lin said. Two spin-off movies are likely to hit theaters sometime in the future.

The successful spinoff Hobbs and Shaw has a sequel that is in the earliest stages of development and Vin Deisel announced a female-led spinoff was in the works last year. F9 cast members recently called for the making of the rumored all-female Fast and Furious.

“But for Dom, the family and the Saga, it deserves an ending. And the sense of finality is very appealing to me personally. It probably would be good for everybody," Lin said.
