Tokyo Olympics 2021: what is Naomi Osaka's net worth?
Four-time Grand Slam winner Osaka, 23, is the highest-paid female athlete ever, according to Forbes magazine.
Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka is now the highest-paid female athlete ever, with her annual earnings currently reported to be about $60 million.
Osaka brings in $55m from endorsements
In Forbes magazine’s 2021 list of the world’s top-paid sportspeople, Osaka is estimated to have pulled in $5m from prize money and $55m from endorsements in the last year.
The four-time Grand Slam winner placed 12th overall in Forbes' rich list - up from 29th in 2020, when she was believed to have pocketed just over $37m across a 12-month period. That figure was also a record for a female athlete in a single year.
2021's next highest-paid female athlete, Osaka’s fellow tennis player Serena Williams, earned almost $20m less than the 23-year-old.
Osaka, who followed up victory at the 2020 US Open in September by winning the Australian Open in February this year, boasts a wide range of sponsorship deals with companies such as Airbnb, BodyArmor, Louis Vuitton, Google, Levi’s and Beats Electronics.
According to Forbes, only four other athletes - UFC fighter Conor McGregor, NBA star LeBron James, tennis legend Roger Federer and golf great Tiger Woods - pocketed more than Osaka in off-the-field earnings over the past year.
Net worth will have risen from 2020 estimate
Her net worth was reported to be around $25m in 2020 - a figure which, in light of the significant rise in her earnings since then, will have grown.
Osaka out for gold at Tokyo 2020
Osaka, the women’s world No. 2, is currently bidding to add Olympic gold to her title haul.
After beating China’s Zheng Saisai 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round of the women’s singles tournament at the delayed Tokyo Games, she then saw off Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic on Monday, winning 6-3, 6-2 at Ariake Tennis Park.
Osaka now faces the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in the third round on Tuesday.
