Keylor Navas hoping to improve poor record against Mexico
This will be a tricky tie for Costa Rica and PSG shot-stopper Keylor Navas. The former Real Madrid man has a poor record against ‘El Tri.’ The first time he played against Mexico was in the 2009 Gold Cup campaign and ‘Los Ticos’ lost on penalties after equalizing 1-1 in extra time.
Eight players made Mexico debut in World Cup qualifiers
Mexico made their debut in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 victory against Jamaica on Thursday night at the Azteca stadium. For this match there were no fans allowed because soccer’s international governing body had punished Mexico for the use of homophobic slurs by its fans during the Gold Cup campaign.
Mexico
El Tri' needed a late goal to defeat Jamaica in their opening game, they were clearly the dominant side and spurned many clear-cut chances to put the game beyond the 'Reggae Boyz' from the Caribbean. The win saw Mexico top the group with all other games ending in draws.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica started their campaign with a disappointing 0-0 stalemate against Panama on Thursday and will relish the visit of Tata Martino's men to show the fans at the Estadio Nacional that they are serious candidates to secure one of the three automatic qualifying places.
