The Champions League, which was known as the European Cup from 1955 to 1992, has had multiple winners over the course of the years.

Real Madrid the unquestioned leaders

The most decorated team by far in the Champions League is Real Madrid, with 13 trophies to their name. However, this is not the only record the Spanish team has achieved throughout the Champions League history. Los Blancos have also managed the most consecutive continental crowns, claiming five in a row between 1956 and 1960.

Real Madrid have lifted the title a total of 13 times, six of which have been won since 2000 alone, with four of them happening over the past five seasons. During Madrid's most recent wins, they faced city rivals Atlético Madrid twice in the trophy decider. Nevertheless, their last final came after a 3-1 win over Liverpool in Kiev.

Years in which Real Madrid came out successful in Champions League: 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018

AC Milan runner-up with seven titles

Madrid are followed in second place by AC Milan, who have won the battle for the trophy on seven occasions. However, it's been 14 years since Milan's last win, in 2007. Since then, the Italians haven't managed to increase their Champions League haul, causing the distance between them and the following teams in the list to shorten.

Milan were led to their most recent European title by Kaká, as the Rossoneri beat Liverpool in Athens to gain revenge for their 2005 final defeat to the Reds.

Liverpool and Bayern tied on six, followed by Barcelona's five

Meanwhile, third position goes to Bayern and Liverpool, after the English team achieved a win in the 2019 final against Tottenham, tying the German's six wins.

On the other hand, Barcelona have not had much luck in the the UEFA tournament, with a total of five wins, a number still far away from the 13 achieved by their domestic arch rivals.

Their last win was in the 2015 season, when they defeated Juventus 3-1.

Ajax, Man Utd, Inter Milan

Ajax, who have won the European title four times, have not managed to do so this century, with 1995 the last time they were victorious, while Inter Milan and Manchester United are both on three trophies each, placing them in sixth position.
