Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa: as it happened
And that's it! Villa have carved out a win at Old Trafford for the first time since 2009, by the same scoreline.
Greenwood! It's not far away from the winger. United have a couple of minutes left to salvage something at Old Trafford.
And Fernandes launches his effort into the stands! My goodness, what a miss!
It's Fernandes vs Martínez...
Penalty! And it's house who is penalized for handball in the area!
Gooooooooooooooool! Kortney Hause! The Villa defender gets the better of Cavani and glances in a corner at the near stick!
And indeed he's off, to be replaced by another academy product in Cameron Archer.
A Villa corner is cleared as far as Buendía, who lays off to Ramsey. The youngster snatches at a shot and is clearly not able to continue.
Ramsey is also off but on his feet and hopefully he'll be ok to continue.
In the meantime Cavani is on for United, McTominay off.
Sustained pressure from Villa but De Gea makes the save. Buendía tees up Ramsey in the area and the youngster is unmarked but slips and appears to injure his knee in doing so.
Dangerous free kick for Villa out on the right as Dalot floors Cash.
Change for Villa as Ings makes way for club record signing Emi Buendía.
A lovely solo run from Pogba and the Frenchman fancies his chances but a left-footed shot is straight at Martínez.
And as such, Cavani is out to warm up.
Greenwood earns United a corner. The home side have been far from threatening since the restart.
Pogba! The Frenchman glides into the area and beats Mings to the ball but fires just wide.
Watkins! The Villa striker is released with a gloriously weighted ball and recovers from a poor first touch to turn Varane and force De Gea into a diving stop!
Maguire has been forced off now and Victor Lindelof is on to replace him.
McGinn takes one for the team by taking Fernandes' ankle out to prevent a United break.
Maguire this time has reason to complain as he gets into a tussle with Konsa in the area. The ref remains constant though and says no dice.
Nothing much is going Villa's way at the moment as McGinn is denied what looks like a clear free kick on the halfway line as Maguire hauls him back to prevent a break.
De Gea once again placed under unneccessary pressure by his defence and once again he makes a hash of a clearance and Villa have a corner.
Watkins down in the area this time as Villa launch a swift attack but the ref isn't having any of it. The Villa striker was looking for something there.
Another United attack breaks down as McTominay and Wan-Bissaka get in a muddle.
The magic sponge has been summoned as Maguire goes down clutching his left calf.
Ings! The Villa striker is through and appeals for a penalty but the ref awards a free kick to United for a Watkins offside instead.
We're back underway!
Edinson Cavani has been going through his paces at half time.
And that's the half! It remains 0-0 at the break despite a raft of decent chances at both ends.
Pogba! Not sure how much he knew about that as the ball flew at his head but the Frenchman adjusted and glances a header just wide of the post.
But it's straight into the wall. Four minutes added at Old Trafford.
United will have a final, very interesting-looking free kick at the end of the half as Pogba is taken out by John McGinn. Edge of the area, Ronaldo assuming the position...
Martínez! What a save from the Villa stopper to deny Maguire at the far post. The England defender planted his header on target with power and the Argentinean had to claw that one away.
And that should have been the opener! Konsa comes charging through a sea of defenders and meets the delivery at the far post, somehow managing to send it over the bar from a yard out!
And it's Luiz who takes, his curling effort clipping Maguire on its way out for a corner. Decent spell for Villa.
And the visitors will have an opportunity from a set piece as Fernandes clatters into Douglas Luiz.
Villa in the ascendancy now as United attempt to adjust to the enforced change.
Shaw now on the turf again and he won't be able to continue here. Diogo Dalot preparing to come on for United.
11 shots for United, two for Villa at the half hour stage, but only one on target from both sides.
And Shaw finds his way into the book for a body check on Matty Cash, who has been excellent so far marauding forward from the Villa right back position.
And he is, in time to help United break up a decent press from Villa.
A potential spot of bother for United as Luke Shaw heads off. Whether the England full back will be come back on remains to be seen.
United are in a purple patch now as both Pogba and Fernandes see shots blocked in the area. The visitors are on the back foot all of a sudden.
Pogba! The ball finds its way to the France international on the edge of the area and he tries to pick his spot but sends his shot just wide.
De Gea! What an error from the keeper, who scuffs a clearance straight to Watkins. The Villa forward hits it back and it's on target but the United keeper recovers to make a great save.
Greenwood! The action moves to the other end and the United youngster, who has been at the heart of everything for the home side so far, gets a shot off but Martínez is equal to it.
Targett! And it's not! On target that is... what a move from Villa and what a ball from Ings, who finds the full back on the far side only for the ball to whistle over the bar from two yards out. That was an excellent chance and they may be in short supply for Villa this afternoon.
Pogba is pickpocketed by Watkins and Villa are showing some excellent movement on and off the ball. De Gea remains a spectator so far though.
A sharp collective intake of breath inside Old Trafford as Ronaldo shapes to shoot but he drags it wide from the edge of the area.
A mazy run from Greenwood from inside the United half results in a corner for the home side.
Greenwood turns on the afterburners and is away on the right before the lino's flag hauls him back.
But it's Fernandes who takes and it's hit straight into the wall.
Free kick for United as Hause clips Greenwood. Ronaldo is eyeing this up...
Bruno! Nice sweeping move from United, Pogba weighing a pass for Shaw, who found the Portuguese on the edge of the box. His shot is thumped well over the bar though.
We're off! Villa get the ball rolling, wearing their away white strip, with United in their traditional red.
Teams in the tunnel now and we're about to get underway at Old Trafford.
And Villa's, which serve to underline how unpredictable Smith's side can be.
A glance at United's last five games in all competitions. Other than a 4-1 tonking of Newcastle, it's fair to say Solskjaer's side have not been imperious.
Aston Villa starting XI confirmed
Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins lead the line for the visitors while Matt Targett makes the 11 after a late fitness test. Academy product Jacob Ramsey gets another start while the out-of-sorts Emi Buendía has to settle for a spot on the bench.
Manchester United starting XI confirmed
Few surprises from Solskjaer as Ronaldo starts up top with support from Greenwood, Pogba and Fernandes. Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire are at the heart of defence and Cavani makes the bench.
As ever, one man will be the center of attention at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo has eight Premier League goals against Aston Villa, more than any other side he has faced in the English top flight, and the Portuguese will be at short odds to add to that tally today.
“I’ve seen David de Gea’s interview this morning and they’ve got title aspirations. A club like Manchester United should have. They’ve just brought in Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho this summer to add to a glittering squad already. It’s a massive club with a massive history, and they’re going to be pushing to challenge the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea. Our job is to go there and go toe-to-toe with them like we did at Chelsea.”
"We didn't lose anyone on Wednesday night. It gives me selection headaches, which is what I'd rather have than the other way around. Sometimes you have to leave players out that you don't feel deserve to be left out. But that's the nature of the beast and we've got to make sure we are ready for every single game."
Solskjaer's squad are in better health, with only Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo definitely ruled out for the home side, although it seems unlikely Edinson Cavani will be available for the Norwegian as well as he continues his recovery from a muscle issue.
Smith has a few injury problems going into this one, with flair summer signing Leon Bailey and fellow attacking players Trézéguet and Keinan Davis out, in addition to midfielder Morgan Sanson. United loanee Axel Tuanzebe is ineligible against his parent club and Matt Targett is doubtful.
Historically though this fixture tends to go only one way. Villa haven't beaten United at Old Trafford since 2009, when Gabby Agbonlahor scored the only goal of the game. And that was the only time Villa have taken all three points home from Manchester in their last 35 attempts.
Dean Smith's Villa have been hot and cold this season but beat Everton 3-0 last weekend and took European champions Chelsea to penalties in the Carabao Cup in midweek.
