eFootball 2022: Steam users give Konami game worst ever rating

The new iteration of Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer football sim, which was launched on Thursday, has not gone down well with gamers.

eFootball 2022: Steam users give Konami game worst ever rating

eFootball 2022, the rebranded replacement for Konami’s long-running football sim Pro Evolution Soccer, has been given an immediate red card by users of the online gaming platform Steam.

eFootball 2022 goes straight to No 1 in Steam 'Hall of Shame'

The new, free-to-play eFootball, which was released on Thursday, has gone straight to the top of Steam 250’s ‘Hall of Shame’ of the 100 worst games ever to be available on Steam.

At the time of writing, Steam users had given the game an overall rating of just 8%, seeing it overtake Flatout 3: Chaos and Destruction - which has a comparatively positive 15% rating - as the biggest flop in the platform’s history.

Users take to social media to share eFootball bugs, graphics fails

eFootball 2022, which is also out on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Windows 10, has quickly become the subject of social-media mirth, with gamers sharing their experiences of questionable graphics and hilarious bugs.

One tweeter, @MGH, has posted images depicting Konami’s somewhat disconcerting rendering of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s faces:

Meanwhile, @BassRicky_ has shared a recording of an eFootball 2022 match in which Ansu Fati can be seen running in a fairly unorthodox, arms-flung-out-behind-his-back pose, with the caption: “Thanks for kill[ing] my fav game.”

Konami to release updates to eFootball 2022

Following eFootball 2022's initial launch, Konami is scheduled to release periodic updates to the game, with the first due to arrive in autumn 2021.

This opening update will include new additions to the total of just nine clubs currently in the game - Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Corinthians, Flamengo, Juventus, Manchester United, Sao Paulo and River Plate - as well as new features such as ‘Creative Team’ mode, which the publisher says will allow you to “build your own dream team”.

Konami says the autumn 2021 update will also extend the game’s compatibility to iOS and Android devices.

FIFA 22 out on Friday

The Standard Edition of FIFA 22, the latest version of the gaming market's dominant football sim, launches on Friday, following Monday's release of the more expansive Ultimate Edition.
