WORLD SERIES

Who are the MLB World Series winners by year?

The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB). Here's the full list of champions since it was first played in 1903.

Update:
The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB). Here's the full list of champions since it was first played in 1903.

The Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series championship is a best-of-seven playoff between the champions of baseball's National League (NL) and American League (AL).

They have been played since 1903, when the NL and the AL agreed to a postseason series to crown an Interleague champion. Only on two occasions, it didn’t take place: in 1904 when the NL champion New York Giants declined to play the AL champion Boston Americans; and in 1994, when the series was canceled due to a players' strike.

The first edition was a best-of-nine playoff, as well as those of 1919, 1920, and 1921, but the rest were a best-of-seven.

Although the majority of World Series have been held during the month of October, some of them have also been played during September and November. In fact, the WS extended into November for the first time in 2001.

List of winners

A total of 116 Series have been played, with 66 victories for the AL champion and 50 for the NL champion. The New York Yankees of the AL have played in 40 World Series, winning 27, the most championship appearances and most victories. They won a record five consecutive WS from 1949 to 1953.

The Dodgers of the NL have the most losses with 14, while the Yankees have the most defeats among AL teams with 13. The St. Louis Cardinals have become champions 11 times, the most among NL clubs and second-most all-time behind the Yankees.

In 1955 the MVP Award was given for the first time, with Brooklyn's Johnny Podres taking the honor. 37 years later, in 1992, the Series was played outside of the United States for the first time, with the Toronto Blue Jays defeating the Braves in six games.

Another date worth remembering is 2016, as the Cubs ended the longest drought in World Series history, winning their first Fall Classic since 1908.
