The Kansas City Chiefs are back above .500 after defeating the Green Bay Packers in the marquee matchup of Sunday afternoon. Patrick Mahomes and offense were limited, but an early touchdown and a couple field goals were enough to seal the Chiefs’ 13-7 win.

Rodgers positive test gives Pack headache on and off field

The headline coming into the weekend was Aaron Rodgers, and his positive COVID test which kept him out of the showdown with the Chiefs. The reigning NFL MVP told reporters this preseason that he had been “immunized” when asked if he was vaccinated. Rodgers is in fact not vaccinated, and that has put the Packers under investigation by the league as their enforcement of COVID protocol has come under question.

That meant the struggling Chiefs defense would have to go up against second year quarterback Jordan Love. The Chiefs may have had some early season troubles with their secondary, but for the second straight week the KC defense look impenetrable.

Tough debut for Love against KC's stingy D

Some of the Chiefs’ success may have to do with Jordan Love getting his first start of his NFL. Love wasn’t spectacular, but he wasn’t horrible. He threw for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but didn’t get much help from his supporting cast.

The Packers’ special teams had an afternoon to forget in Arrowhead. Love and the Green Bay offense drove down the field and were in scoring range twice in the first two quarters, but Mason Crosby missed his first field goal from 40 yards, and had his second field goal blocked by Alex Okafor.

Chiefs jump out to lead, let defense do the rest

The Chiefs scored on their opening drive of the game thanks to Darrel Williams’ rushing, and Travis Kelce’s one yard touchdown catch. While the Packers missed two first half field goals, Harrison Butker hit two field goals before the halftime break to extend the lead to 13-0.

Kansas City’s defense took over once Mahomes gave them a lead to work with. The Packers failed to convert on any of the first eight third downs they faced.

Love finally punched the Packers into the end zone with under five minutes to go in the game, but that would be the last time they touched the ball.

Chiefs back about .500 as Packers' streak snapped

The home side rode Darrel Williams to the promise land, by picking up first down after first down until the clock ran out.

Williams ended the night with 19 rushes for 70 yards while Patrick Mahomes threw for just 166 yards.

It may have been ugly, but the victory gives the Chiefs a winning record, and keeps them in the mix for a Wild Card Spot. The Packers drop to 7-2 after having their seven game win streak snapped.
