Sergio Agüero’s heart problem may force the Barcelona striker to retire, according to a report in the Catalan media.

Retirement option "on the table", Catalunya Ràdio says

The Catalunya Ràdio programme El Matí said on Friday morning that recent tests carried out on the 33-year-old indicate he may be unable to continue playing.

“There is pessimism [over Agüero’s condition], and the possibility that he will not play football again at a professional level is a real and weighty option that has already been explained [to him] and placed on the table,” Catalunya Ràdio’s Marta Carreras reported.

Striker forced off against Alavés with chest difficulties

Agüero, who joined Barça on a free transfer in the summer, had to be substituted in the first half of the Blaugrana’s 1-1 draw with Deportivo Alavés on 30 October, after complaining of chest discomfort and dizziness.

The Argentina international also suffered a similar incident when he was a youth footballer.

Ruled out for at least three months after substitution

On 1 November, Barça issued a statement confirming Agüero had been “subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process” and said the former Manchester City star would be out of action until at least February 2022.

Reports in the wake of his withdrawal against Alavés said the player had suffered an arrhythmia, which occurs when the heart beats too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly.
