Chivas managed to book a spot in the wildcard after finishing in 10th place after 17 match days in the 2021 Apertura tournament in the Liga MX. They had play against Puebla and obtain a victory at the Cuauhtémoc stadium to qualify for the quarter finals.

Disappointing season for Chivas

The team from Guadalajara wanted to forget the turbulent regular season they have had and start from scratch in the playoffs. They entered the Liga MX Wildcard weekend with the aim of advancing to the next round, but failed to do so and saw their season come to an end.

Isaac Brizuela scored the first one of the night for the visiting side, but Christian Tabó equalized  in the 20th minute. Chivas would take the lead in the 62nd minute and it seemed that they were going to get the victory, but Lucas Maia scored a late goal to force the extra time.

With the game tied 2-2 the tie, and with it a place in the quarter final, had to be resolved in a penalty shootout. Puebla won the shootout 6-5 to advance to the next round. Now Chivas will see their turbulent season come to an end and Puebla keep their hopes of winning the Liga MX trophy this season alive.
