Is the post office open on Thanksgiving?

All federal offices will be closed, and the post office is no exception as the US gears up for one of its biggest holidays.

Update:

Thanksgiving 2021 is just around the corner. The turkeys have been pardoned, the food already bought (hopefully) and family arrangements have been organized. For many families, Thanksgiving 2021 will be the first opportunity to meet up with the covid-19 pandemic looming in the background, but it is surely a time to try and forget, and enjoy.

What will surely be good news is that many places of work will be closed on Thursday, more so than in previous years. This should give families the opportunity to gather and enjoy the holiday.

Like all other official holidays, Post offices will be closed on Thursday, November25.

The other days they were and are closed on are:

  • New Year's Day: Friday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, January 18
  • Presidents' Day/Washington's Birthday: Monday, February 15
  • Memorial Day: Monday, May 31
  • Independence Day: Monday, July 5 (observed, because July 4 falls on a Sunday)
  • Labor Day: Monday, September 6
  • Columbus Day: Monday, October 11
  • Veterans Day: Thursday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 25
  • Christmas: Saturday, December 25

What else closes on Thanksgiving?

Like most holidays in the US, government offices and banks are also closed on Thanksgiving. Transport, like buses, will be running a reduced schedule, so if you are meeting family using public transport it is worth double-checking times as it is likely they will not be their usual.

Some of the biggest stores in the US are shutting up shop on Thursday. Walmart and Target previously announced they will not be open on Thanksgiving, marking a change on previous years. The move has been lauded, giving people the opportunity to meet up without the prospect of another shift in the background.

Stores weren't always open on Thanksgiving. Target began to do so a decade ago in an attempt to counter the then-growing selling spree of Black Friday. However, in store sales continue to be dwarfed by the event. Last year, the holiday trailed only Cyber Monday and Black Friday in online sales, according to the Adobe Digital Economy Index.
