The appointment of Slavko Vinčić as the referee for the World Cup final has once again thrust him into the spotlight, though not necessarily for his on-field track record. Social media posts resurfaced linking him to a 2020 police raid in Bosnia, but many of these claims omit a crucial detail: the Slovenian official was never accused of participating in any criminal activity under investigation.

The incident occurred in May 2020, when law enforcement in Bosnia and Herzegovina raided a property during an investigation into alleged offenses involving prostitution, drug trafficking, and illegal weapons possession. Vinčić was among several individuals identified at the scene during the operation.

According to Vinčić himself, as well as subsequent reporting from highly credible international media and authorities, the referee was simply attending a social gathering and was briefly detained while police conducted their routine on-site procedures. After giving a formal statement, he was released without charge and has never been officially implicated as a member of the criminal organization under investigation.

The Vinčić backstory resurfacing after his World Cup final appointment

Over the years, the incident appeared to be a thing of the past. However, his appointment to officiate the World Cup final caused old photographs, articles, and posts to go viral once again across various platforms—frequently accompanied by claims that flatly contradict the verified facts.

The confusion stems from the fact that while Vinčić was indeed present during the raid, his presence did not equate to involvement in the crimes being investigated. Authorities never established any link between the referee and the dismantled criminal network, and he faced no legal proceedings following the investigation. Furthermore, Slovenian football governing bodies publicly backed his version of events, reiterating that his involvement was strictly a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time during the raid.

Far from permanently damaging his career, Vinčić continued to referee elite fixtures in both European and global football, cementing his status as one of FIFA and UEFA’s most trusted officials. Ultimately, his selection for the final is a reflection of his on-field performance and does not change the official conclusions regarding the 2020 incident—a case that has only regained notoriety due to the massive media spotlight surrounding his appointment to the biggest match of the tournament between Argentina and Spain.
