Real Salt Lake beat Sporting KC to advance to conference final
The Utah-based team defeated Sporting Kansas City on the road with a dramatic 2-1 win to book their spot in the Western Conference final.
Real Salt Lake have demonstrated that they are willing to do whatever it takes to win games and the Utah-based side's victory against Sporting Kansas City on Sunday is an example of that. Sporting KC hosted RSL at the Children’s Mercy Park and took an early lead through Johnny Russell, who scored from the spot in the 24th minute.
It was not until the 72nd minute that Anderson Julio found an equalizer, before Bobby Woods struck in stoppage time to send Real Salt Lake through to the conference final. The underdogs eliminated the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and now they will go on the road once again to face Portland Timbers on 4 December.
“Today we got behind it a little bit with that PK, but never lost our discipline, stayed organized. And the guys that came in did a fantastic job of really changing the momentum and really being on the front foot and really attacking the goal,” said RSL head coach Pablo Mastroeni during the postgame.
David Ochoa the pantomime villain again
Homegrown player David Ochoa of RSL has made a lot of enemies across Major League Soccer because when his team is winning he wastes time on goal kicks, goes down after every collision and constantly trash talks opposing players and home supporters. Ochoa gets booed everywhere he goes and enjoys his role as pantomime villain.
"The league has doubted us this whole season," said Ochoa. "It's funny for me. I like humor. I think it's funny we're shutting a lot of mouths up. So that's definitely our motivation."
