Messi's son asks what we're all wondering
Lionel Messi recently won his seventh Ballon D'Or award, and his son asks the question we all want to know the answer to: why did you win it?
On Monday, Lionel Messi won his seventh Ballon D'Or award. Not everyone agrees that he deserved it though. The award is meant to be based on how well a player did during that calendar year, and not how good of a player they are in general. So, some people were a bit upset that Robert Lewandowski did not receive the award. In fact, several others had a better year than Messi, including N'Golo Kante, Karim Benzema, and Ruben Dias.
In this viral video, Messi's kids are looking at all his trophies and notice there's a seventh when it used to only be six. He asks the question to his dad: "Why did you win it?"
Messi's response? "I don't know."
Well, neither do we, really. The way the award is determined is by votes. Journalists in FIFA's national associations are the ones deciding who wins. One journalist per country can vote and they can choose among five different players. So, why did he win? Because enough journalists voted for him. Oh, and also coaches and national-team captains who may or may not be biased.
