Carles Gil named 2021 Major League Soccer MVP

Carles Gil had a breakout season with the New England Revolution and on Tuesday he was handed the 2021 Landon Donovan Award as MLS Most Valuable Player. The midfielder led the Revs’ to the Supporters’ Shield after the conclusion of the regular season, the first win in franchise history, as they set a new single-season points record.

Gil’s numbers during the campaign

The Spanish midfielder scored four goals and led the league with 18 assists, the 10th most in a single MLS season. Eight of Gil's assists directly helped the New England Revolution to victories on the way to a total of 73 points on their way to a plave in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League.

"It is an honor for me to be named the MLS Most Valuable Player," Gil said in a team news release. "I want to thank everyone who voted for me, everyone who works at the club, our coaching staff, our fans, and especially my teammates. Together, we achieved an unforgettable regular season."

The 29-year-old was also named the 2021 MLS Comeback Player of the Year having been previously voted 2019 MLS Newcomer of the Year. Unfortunately, the Revs’ loss to New York City FC in the conference semi-final last week saw their historic season come to an end. The 2021 MLS Cup final will be played on 11 December between NYCFC against Portland Timbers.
